The #RockingMotherhood tag had been doing the rounds for a few months now ever since the lovely Pat at White Camelias published a post listing 10 reasons she was rocking this motherhood gig. It was such a popular post she started the tag so that other mums could celebrate their wins too.

I have been a huge fan of this tag since day one. We are all so good at putting ourselves down and focussing on all things we might be doing wrong as parents that we never really take the time to sit back and think, actually, you know what, I’m doing pretty damn well.

I was tagged to take part about 5 weeks ago now by the fantastic Susie at This Is Me Know (look out for a future collaboration with this lovely lady!). It was hard to come up with 10 reasons though so I kept putting it off. Finally, after giving myself a good talking to, I sat my butt down and wrote the post.

10 Reasons Why I'm Rocking Motherhood

So here it is, 10 reasons why I’m rocking motherhood:

  1. I give my kids the freedom to make their own decisions, from what they want to wear to what we have to eat. I may give them a few options to choose from though otherwise we’d be walking round naked eating chocolate all day.
  2. We have regular days out exploring local forests, castles and parks and I’m happy to let the kids lead the way.
  3. I spend all day every day with L while M is at school, so I make a special effort to make sure he gets one on one time too. As soon as the youngest is in bed, I give the next hour over to my son and do whatever he wants. We usually snuggle up on the couch and watch a program for half an hour then either play a game or read a book. Every few months I also arrange for L to spend the day with her Grandparents and take M out for the day just the two of us. We usually go to Pizza Hut and the cinema.
  4. We have great dance parties. See Words to Live By #12: Dance and 10 Feel Good Songs To Get You Dancing
  5. We always have a good morning cuddle to start the day right.
  6. The past four years my son has had a themed birthday party (hot wheels, minecraft, lego, star wars) and I hand-made invitations and created themed party food. This always gets me serious mummy points.
  7. I’m happy to let them get muddy and have fun when we are out, whether its rolling down hills or jumping in muddy puddles.
  8. I let my son loose in the kitchen to do ‘experiments’. This basically involves mixing all sorts of random ingredients in a big jug and adding food colouring. The result is truly disgusting but he loves it.
  9. I’m often told that my son has great manners and is so polite. L is getting there too and is already quite good with her p’s and q’s. I must be doing something right.
  10. I always make time for reading stories.

So there you have it, my 10 reasons why I’m rocking motherhood. Once I got started it actually wasn’t as hard as I thought. Now I’m going to tag some other lovely ladies to explore why they are rocking motherhood too.

  1. Setting aside time for the older sibling is so important, I always try to do the same for our 4yo. Great post that has got me thinking…

  3. Love these reasons – especially the letting him get in the kitchen and do his experiments, something I’m not sure I’d let Alfie do! Although he is getting a mud kitchen for his birthday, so he can make all the mess he likes out there! #coolmumclub

  4. This is so wonderful! It’s so important to remember how we are rocking this mom thing. You and I seemed to think along the same lines. A day where a bath is necessary for the kiddos is a good day.

  5. Morning cuddles are the best. I love the sound of the dance parties and the themed birthday parties. The experiments in the kitchen sound like fun too – I’m not quite brave enough to let my girls loose there but I’m with you on letting them explore and get muddy. I love this tag, it’s such a brilliant way to encourage us to look at the things we’re doing right. #coolmumclub

    1. Thank you. The experiments in the kitchen used to make me really nervous but now he’s older he doesn’t make quite so much mess thankfully x

  7. I love the sound of the kitchen experiments – I can imagine the mess but also the big smiles! I’d love to see my son get all muddy – sadly I seem to have the only toddler in the world who hates mud and mess! At least it saves on all the cleaning afterwards I suppose! 1. Ha ha, not at all. My son always hated getting dirty, wouldn’t touch mud, or paint or even sand! He’s mostly over it now judging by the state of his clothes when he gets in from school, but he still hates it on his hands. My daughter is the exact opposite and loves getting dirty x

  9. These are 10 really good reasons for #rockingmotherhood. 2 and 4 make for fun times and it’s so important to let the kids make decisions and lead when possible. I wish I could claim I have polite children – I am still constantly saying ‘what’s that magic word’?! Look forward to finding out more about your and Susie’s collaboration. #ablogginggoodtime xx

  14. You are definitely rocking motherhood! I particularly love that you let your little one have free range in the kitchen and mix whatever he likes. I’d forgotten it now, but I think my parents used to let us do the same thing and it was such fun 🙂 Great post, thanks for sharing it on #MarvMondays. Emily

Great read, brilliant idea because as women we tend to OVERTHINK the bad stuff and make ourselves feel bad simply by overthinking…its madness…We blugeon ourselves with that good aul parenting guilt stick, so I LOVE this idea, delighted I read this and discovered #RockingMotherhood. 23. Great post. I think we need to remember how we are rocking it even on days when we feel like we aren’t. Were doing the best for our kids and that’s whats important. I love number 3 which I should start doing with Master 7.

  24. Some awesome reasons! You are a fab mum for letting your son mix random stuff together too. I think I will need to become a little more relaxed about that sort of thing as my daughter gets older! I’m glad you managed to get to 10 easier than you thought – guess that’s the point of it, to make us realise how fab we all are! #FamilyFun
