Each week we change the words/quote/saying that we are displaying on the noticeboard in our kitchen; these are the words we try to live by individually and as a family that week. Some weeks may focus on lifting our mood, others may be about motivation or attitude to life; something that speaks to us on some level and that we can directly apply to our lives. Changing the words each week stops them from becoming just another thing you walk past without really seeing, it keeps things fresh and stops them losing their power. This series is where I share those words with you in the hope they may help you and your family too. If you a new to the series and want to learn more, you can read the first post here, or check out the Words To Live By tab in the top menu.

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a great festive period and are full of positivity for the year ahead. This weeks words are very fitting for this time of year when we are all thinking ahead to what we want to achieve in the coming months:

Words To Live By #10 Dream Big

Aside from making new year’s resolutions (does anyone ever stick to those?), the start of January is also when we set our sights on the future. When we dream about this being our year. Sometimes we have no concrete idea what that means, just that we want to have a good year. Other times we may have a whole list of things that we want to achieve. One thing we almost always do however, is sell ourselves short.

When you think about what you really want to happen this year, what is the first thing that pops into your head? Did you immediately discount it as unreasonable? Why?

It seems to be a common trait amongst many of us that we overthink things too much (see my post on overthinking), we over analyse too soon. We talk ourselves out of those big dreams because we think they could never really happen, not to us. And when we think that way, we are right.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”  Henry Ford

“The future you see is the future you get.” Robert G Allen

But what if we could make those dreams a reality? Unless we try, we’ll never know.

“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to peruse them.” Walt Disney

When I was setting my goals for the year ahead I had some pretty big dreams at the back of my mind but I didn’t actually write them down at first. I decided to go with goals that were much more achievable. But they didn’t excite me. What is the point of setting goals for yourself that don’t excite you in some way? Where is the fun in playing it safe? What is the point in having dreams at all if we don’t at least try to make them come true?

“Set a goal to achieve that is so big, so exhilarating, that it excites you and scares you at the same time.” Bob Proctor

“If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

So that is my intention this year. I am dreaming big. Even if I don’t quite get there, I will get a lot further along towards that dream than if I had decided to play it safe.

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Les Brown

“A year from now you will wish you had started today”. Karen Lamb

One thing is for certain, if you want your dreams to become a reality, you need to believe wholeheartedly that they can be. Don’t over analyse and question the how, just believe anything is possible.

“Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.” Oprah Winfrey

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” Anatole France

“Don’t downgrade your dream just to fit your reality. Upgrade your conviction to match your destiny.” Stuart Scott

When it comes to setting the smaller milestone goals for the year, my main question behind each one will be: does this move me closer to my dream? If the answer is no, and its not an essential task or something I really want to do, then I’ll discard it.

How about you? Are you dreaming big this year?
