I’ve been tagged in the 10 Things That Make Me Happy tag by the lovely Heidi from Southern Mummy. You can read her post here. I love anything that gets us to focus on the good things in life so here is what made my top ten:
1. My husband
It may sound soppy but not only is Keith the love of my life, he’s my best friend and the one person I can always rely on to pick me up when I’m feeling down. There isn’t a day goes by when he doesn’t make me laugh or smile and I thank my lucky stars every day that I have him in my life. We have been through a lot over the years and even in our darkest days he always knew how to lighten the mood and raise a smile and I will be eternally grateful for that.
2. Our Children
They may drive me up the wall some days but these crazy little people are my life. M is kind and caring, funny and imaginative (he writes the best stories) and the way he looks out for his little sister melts my heart. L is feisty and headstrong and the most daring little girl I’ve ever known. She also has a great sense of humour and adores her big brother. They make a great double act and have me in stitches every day and no matter how hard a day I am having, one smile from them and everything is alright with the world.
3. Having grandparents close by
We are really lucky that we have both sets of grandparents living fairly close. Both kids love spending time with them and I love how excited they get whenever we tell them they are coming round or we are going to visit them. Watching that relationship is really special. It also comes in handy when you need a quick babysitter!
4. Walks with the dogs
Nothing clears the cobwebs like getting out in the fresh air with the dogs. Since we bought a dog cage for the back of the car we have been able to get further afield with them and go places where they can run free off lead. M likes to run ahead exploring and the dogs go off with him, running back every now and then to make sure we’re all still together.
5. Collecting stones
When I was younger I used to love collecting bits of quartz and fluorite when we went out on walks and we recently discovered a place very close to where I used to go as a kid where the floor is littered with them. We’ve had great fun recently seeing who can find the biggest pieces and then carrying them back to put in the planters in our garden. Read Happy Days: Forbidden Corner, Lazy Days and Stone Collecting.
6. The beach
There is something magical about being by the sea and I always come away feeling calm and refreshed. We recently discovered a fabulous beach about an hour away and I imagine we will be spending quite a few days there during the holidays. Read Happy Days: Cars, Caves and Beaches.
I’ve always been a bookworm and love disappearing into another world for a while. I haven’t had much time recently but whenever I do find the time I always feel better for it. I’m over the moon that M has rediscovered his love of books and has started reading for 30 minutes every night when he goes to bed. He has gone through 10 books in the last three weeks alone!
8. Quiet mornings
I always get up early while everyone else is still in bed and do a five minute mindfulness meditation and then sit and eat breakfast and have a nice hot cup of tea in perfect peace and quiet. It sets me up for the whole day and I always feel testy on the days when I don’t do it.
9. Exploring new places
This last few months we have been making an effort to get out and about and explore more at the weekends. We have found some incredible places that are completely off the beaten track and the kids and dogs can run free. There’s something enchanting about not knowing what will be round the next bend and making new discoveries together.
10. homemade pizza and Movie night
When Keith is home Friday nights are usually homemade pizza night. The bases are really easy to make in the bread machine and we all have our own that we can add whatever we want to. Now that L is a little bit older we have stared watching a movie while we eat it as well and there’s just something special about us all sitting together on the couch. Sometimes, the simple things really are the best.
