This post forms part of the A-Z of Self-Care for Busy Parents series. If you missed the introductory post you can read it here.
We all invest so much of our time and energy in other people, whether it’s family, friends or work, we often neglect the one person we really should be investing more in, and that’s ourselves. How can we be the best versions of ourselves, and give other’s our best, without investing in ourselves on a regular basis? At it’s core, this is what self-care is all about.
“Believing and investing in yourself is the best way to shift your thinking from a paradigm of excuses to one of solutions.” – Farshad Asl
Here are some excellent ways that you can start to invest in yourself right away:
Take some time to dream big and think about where you want to be in five years time. If you could do anything at all, what would it be? Maybe you dream of a career change, maybe you want to be fitter/healthier, maybe you want to move home or go on the holiday of a lifetime. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to dream. Read Dream Big for more ideas.
Now you’ve dreamed big, start making plans. Put a time limit on when you are going to achieve your dream, whether it’s six months or five years, and plan what you need to do to make your dream a reality. Break it down into as many small parts as possible and plan your time so that you can invest as much as possible into achieving it.
Learn something new
It’s a proven fact that learning helps keep our brains young. Whether it’s something you need to learn to help you move towards your big dream or just something you’ve always fancies trying your hand at, give it a go. I taught myself how to crochet from YouTube tutorials and I always love learning a new pattern. Read Learn Something New for more ideas.
Foster your creativity
There are so many benefits of being more creative it’s always time well spent, no matter what the outcome. Read Get Creative for some great ideas on some creative activities you could try.
Setting aside some time to read will always pay big dividends. If you’re reading to learn you will knowledge, if you’re reading for pleasure you gain some relaxation and a few moments of escape into another world.
Look after your health
As much as it pains me to admit it, one of the best ways to invest in yourself and your future is to keep yourself fit and healthy through good food and exercise. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated though, read Exercise Without Exercising for some great tips on fitting it in around the kids.
