Read all about my attempts to build the Meccano MicronoidMy 7yr old son received this Meccano Micronoid for Christmas. It’s a cute (don’t tell him I used that word) little robot that you have to build and then using the buttons on the top of his head you can program him to move around.

The box does state that it’s for children 8+ but my son helped his Dad build a couch before Christmas and has been building amazing lego creations since he could sit up so we weren’t too concerned. Plus I’d offered to help out as it was something nice for us to sit and do together while my daughter had her afternoon nap.

This is what you are met with when you open up the box and my son and I were both quite excited to get started.

Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last. The nuts and bolts are so tiny and so fiddly that we both had real problems and you seemed to need at least three hands to be able to hold the pieces in place while you screwed them together. Not only that, a few of them are positioned so closely that they are difficult to get to (please excuse the dry cracked hands, winter is playing havoc).

In the end my son got bored and I was left to build it on my own. There was a lot of cursing I’m not proud of – seems I should have paid attention to the age on the box after all.

I’m usually pretty handy but it took me over an hour just to get to the stage in the above photo, mainly because of how tricky it was getting the pieces in the with the way they are angled (I may also have put the first bits on wrong and had to take it apart and start again but we won’t mention that).

Once that bit was done though the rest was actually pretty easy and I’m confident M could have done it himself but he’d moved on to something else by then and I was refusing to give up till it was finished!

Wouldn’t you know, as soon as it was built whatever M had been engrossed in while I was building suddenly wasn’t so interesting anymore and he wanted to play with the micronoid.

Using the programming buttons on the top you can create a sequence of movements for him to perform, you can also record things for him say or noises to make which he then repeats in a robotic voice. There is an 8-ball mode where you ask him a question and he’ll reply yes or no, you can play music and he will dance to it, and to top it off, he can fart, which I’m sure will be the highlight for most kids in this age group!

M spent the rest of the evening playing with him but then had to hide him when his 2yr old little sister took a bit too much of a liking to him and starting pulling on his arms.

You can buy other micronoids as well (this one is called Socket) and they will interact with one another. M did mention he was going to ask for one for another one for his birthday in April so it must be a hit, but I’ve told him he’ll have to build the next one himself, after all, he will be 8 then!

Retailing at £35-45 they’re not cheap, but if your kid loves Meccano and robots they’ll be a big hit, just be prepared to help out with the fiddly bits.

As an aside, when we asked Socket if I was the best mum in the world, he answered yes. So he’s a pretty smart little robot 😉

  1. The final product looks great but I know (like you) I’d be left to build (MY son has fine motor skills problems). Shame it’s so fiddly. Thank you for linking up to #ablogginggoodtime 🎉

  4. That does look fiddly!! I always find kids lose interest if something is too complicated to build, like Lego! Thanks for sharing for #marvmondays x

    1. Yes, my son prefers to build his own Lego models, instructions are boring apparently 😂

  5. A farting robot? Technology has indeed reached its peak! Lol.
My little one still too young for something like this but I bet her mum and myself would have some craic with it. For research purposes, of course.. 😉

  7. Henrys too young for this little Robot, but my Dad would love this, haha. There’s his birthday gift sorted. I’ll just remind him to wear his glasses on the fiddly tiny bits, haha. Renee x #bestandworst

  9. looks pretty cool. I’d imagine I might do a bit of cursing putting that together also. Cut my finger changing wiper blades on a car last week! #bestandworst

  10. What a cute looking little robot. My boys would adore this. However, I am sure I would have to rebuild it numerous times. Especially after my two yo gets hold of it 🙂 #globalblogging
