Last month the hubby and I were extremely lucky to be able to go away on a romantic two night break at Crab Manor Hotel near Thirsk. It is a place we have been to quite a few times now, although usually only for one night, and we absolutely love it there. My mother-in-law had already offered to look after the kids for one night but we decided to be cheeky and ask if she would mind doing two nights. Amazing woman that she is, she said yes!

At Crab Manor Hotel each room is styled after a famous destination from around the world. There are eight rooms inside the manor house itself which all have access to the communal hot tubs and sauna in the courtyard. In the grounds however there are a further 9 Luxury rooms that all have there own private patio and hot tub. So far we have stayed in the Le Manoir (Oxford) and Mount Nelson (Cape Town) rooms inside the manor house and in the grounds we have stayed in Bora Bora (Tahiti), Bardola Lodge (Norway), Ruka Lodge (Lapland), Bellagio (Las Vegas) and this time we stayed in Le Touessrock (Mauritius) which also had a private sauna. I know, I know, I’m totally spoilt! We tried to decide which our favourite was so far and for both of us it was tie between either of the Lodges and Bellagio.

These pictures really don’t do it justice and make everything appear quite small but it was actually a pretty big room and the walk-in shower was huge, and the sauna was much bigger than I had expected too.

This is where we spent most of the two days. Although on the way there I did suddenly realise I had forgotten to pack my bikini! We stopped off in Northallerton and in Thirsk to try and buy something but given the season there was nothing at all so I had go in in my underwear. Thank god we weren’t in the communal hot tubs that’s all I can say.

Attached to the hotel (although not physically, its through the grounds) is the award winning Crab and Lobster Restaurant. The menu is huge and the food is out of this world. It is a very quirky place with every nook and cranny stuffed with oddments, from books, teapots, clocks, ornaments, and pictures to a vintage diving suit. Every time we go we manage to see something we hadn’t spotted before.

The first few times we visited we followed convention and booked into the restaurant for our evening meal (you can also have complimentary canapés in the hotel lounge 7-8pm) and while this was great (and the evening menu is a bit more special, as is the atmosphere), we felt like we were missing out on the room we had just spent so much money on (by room, I mean hot tub!). Check in isn’t until 3pm and by the time you have got settled in and had a bit of a chill in the hot tub its time to get out and get showered and start getting ready. Then by the time you get back from the meal it’s pretty late, you’re extremely full (food and wine!) and pretty tired so the hot tub probably isn’t too sensible. Every time we have been since we have booked into the restaurant on the afternoon instead and still had an amazing three course meal, by the time you are finished its time to check in and you don’t have to leave your room again till breakfast (we pack snacks for if we get peckish later, you can order drinks to your room but not food unfortunately).

As we had two days this time we did originally plan to have an evening meal on the second night but changed our minds on the day because we went back for lunch again and were far too full to eat another meal.

I’m afraid I didn’t get any pictures of the inside of the restaurant or the gorgeous food (other than the soufflé above) as we were far to busy having a good time and enjoying every bite, plus this time away was all about the two of us spending time together so other than these pictures the phone was put away.

The hotel is quite expensive with manor house rooms at £165 per night and the luxury rooms at £265 per night, but before we booked it this time I did try to find somewhere else to try out and all the ones of a similar quality and with the same facilities were actually double the price (which is why we decided to stay two nights this time, after all it would be the same price as one night at the others ;)).

If you are looking for a romantic getaway for a special occasion (or just because you deserve it) I can highly recommend Crab Manor Hotel. They also reward loyal customers with a passport scheme. Each time you visit you get a stamp in your ‘passport’ and every three stamps or so you receive a reward, starting at a bottle of champagne, then a £50 off voucher, then a free meal for two, then a £100 voucher, then an overnight stay. Once you have filled the passport completely you are invited to a special dinner (along with others who have filled theirs) and one lucky couple will be chosen at random to win a holiday to one of the room destinations (also chosen by a draw). What’s not to love about that.

Have you been on any child-free getaways lately?

This is NOT a sponsored post and there are NO affiliate links, this is just a place we love to visit that I wanted to share with you.

  4. Aaaahh, what a wonderful time you had! That’s just the sort of place I would enjoy staying. Of course, I would choose the room that is most “English”! (PS The giveaway in my current post is also open to people outside the US *if* they wish to have it sent to someone in the US.)

    1. It’s like heaven on earth. As much as I love my kids, time away with the hubby every now and then is bliss, especially as my husband is away with work so much (10 weeks at time). And I return a much happier and more relaxed mummy so it’s a win all round x
