Each week we change the words/quote/saying that we are displaying on the noticeboard in our kitchen; these are the words we try to live by individually and as a family that week. Some weeks may focus on lifting our mood, others may be about motivation or attitude to life; something that speaks to us on some level and that we can directly apply to our lives. Changing the words each week stops them from becoming just another thing you walk past without really seeing, it keeps things fresh and stops them losing their power. This series is where I share those words with you in the hope they may help you and your family too. If you a new to the series and want to learn more, you can read the first post here, or check out the Words To Live By tab in the top menu.

Do you ever get so caught up in life that you forget to appreciate the little things? If so, you’re certainly not alone. We are all so busy and rushing from one task to the next, mentally working through all the things on our to-do lists, that we don’t take the time to appreciate all those small details that make it all worth while.

Do you ever get so caught up in life that you forget to appreciate the little things? If so, you're certainly not alone. Read on ...

In light of last week’s atrocity in London I think we all hugged our children a little tighter and appreciated how lucky we are. But it shouldn’t take an event like that to make us sit up and take notice of all the good in our lives.

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. Robert Brault

I’m a firm believer in having goals and dreaming big (see Dream Big), but what is the point of it all if you let the little things pass you by? So many people believe that if they can get a certain thing done, achieve a certain goal, buy a certain thing, then they’ll be happy. But true happiness isn’t found in the big things, it’s the small things that are around us every day. We just need to open our eyes and see them.

Learning how to love the little things in life, is called learning how to be happy. Marcela Reka

Children don’t have any problems with this and can find happiness in the smallest of things. If you have ever watched a child exploring outside, finding delight in a flower or a twig or rock, you will know what I mean. We need to take a leaf out of their book.

Delight in the little things. Rudyard Kipling

This week I’m going to make a conscious effort to really notice and appreciate the little things that make me smile on a daily basis and I hope you’ll join me. After all:

The little things? The little moments? They aren't little. John Kabat-Zinn

To get you started, here are just a few of life’s little things that can bring so much joy:

  • rainbows
  • a smile from a stranger
  • a smile form your child or a loved one
  • your child’s laughter
  • holding hands
  • a hot cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate
  • a glass of wine
  • soaking in a hot bath
  • flowers
  • a cosy blanket
  • reading a good book
  • watching your favourite program/film
  • enjoying a family meal
  • a hug
  • the stars on a clear night
  • the smell of rain
  • the smell of freshly cut grass
  • a compliment
  • the wind in the trees
  • small acts of kindness (see Be Kind)
  • freshly washed sheets
  • the sun on your face

Do you take time to appreciate the little things in life? What else would you add to the list above? Let me know in the comments below.

When searching for quotes for this post I found so many great ones and I really wanted to include them all. However, I think it would have cluttered up the post and detracted from the simple message. So, I’ve included printouts of my favourite 16 (including the four above) in the FREE workbook below.

  1. It’s really important to enjoy the little things, isn’t it? In our race for bigger, better, faster, we seem to miss out on all the small things that brought us so much joy when we were younger. My favorite was (and still is) watching the shapes in the clouds. #mg
