Setting up a blog is a pretty exciting time, full of potential and opportunities. But, it’s also very time-consuming, something you should be able to dedicate a good chunk of uninterrupted time to, right? So why, oh why, did I decide that the first day of the summer holidays would be a great time to start? Seriously, tell me, because I have no idea what I was thinking.
I have been considering doing it for some time now and the last few weeks I decided to start really researching the possibility and coming up with a huge list of potential post ideas. As the summer holidays drew closer I started to feel a sense of urgency, like if I didn’t bite the bullet now the holidays would start and I would find endless reasons to procrastinate and put it off.
So, on the night my son broke up from school I found myself sitting up till 1am setting up a blog. Getting my domain name and hosting set up and ready was actually really quick and simple, the hard part came when I had to chose a wordpress theme. Who knew there were so many! And all those different customising options!
My talent for procrastination knows no bounds (seriously, I am the Queen of procrastination), and I spent all last night playing around with themes too, only to change my mind again this morning.
In the end, I realised it didn’t really matter about the theme being perfect for now, it’s an element I can change at a later date (if I need to) when I get a better feel for how the site will develop. It was all just another way of putting off writing the dreaded first post and putting myself out there. So here I am, getting on with it.
The summer holidays may be the busiest time of the year, and the opportunities to write limited, but at least I should have plenty of material to draw from.
How about you? Are you a blogger? What prompted you to finally bite the bullet? Did you pick a nice quiet time (do those even exist when you have kids?), or just jump right in? I’d love to hear from you (read: please tell me I’m not crazy).
